First Light Farm's Learn and Grow Program (A Season-Long Learning Opportunity)
At the heart of First Light Farm's educational programs is our annual "Learn and Grow" program with Jeremy Houston, First Light Farm's Field Manager. "Learn and Grow" is an experiential, hands-on, season-long program for people wanting to learn to grow their own vegetables.
In this experiential class, you'll learn about soil preparation and amendments, seeding techniques and propagation, familiarity with planting different crops, seasonal cycles, and crop rotation. You'll learn how to use some small equipment, irrigation techniques, weed and pest control, harvest techniques, and how to build a high tunnel. You will also be able to sell any of your produce at First Light Farm's farm stand.
There's so much to learn if you want to know how to grow your own vegetables. We invite you to join us as part of our farm community as you learn the skills you'll need to become proficient in growing healthy food. Limited to 12 participants.
Taking reservations for the 2024 season.
Time Commitment: Twice a month on Sunday afternoons, April through September, 10-2 pm.
First class: April 7th or 14th (choose one), 10-2 pm, 10-2 pm
Cost: We don’t charge a fee for our program, but instead ask you to give back equal time to the farm helping with whatever needs to be done on our small farm. Preferably on alternate Sundays, but we're flexible. Reciprocity is one of the hallmarks of the natural world.

"At First Light Farm’s Learn and Grow class, the knowledge I gained about sustainable farming, growing wholesome food, and the importance of community supported agriculture nourished my soul. Beyond the agricultural knowledge gained, the program provided a supportive community, highlighting the collaborative spirit inherent in small farms. I am grateful for the experience and look forward to growing healthy food for my family and community this year."

"It was so awesome to be part of the First Light Farm's Learn and Grow" program. Partaking in the full program you get to start in the greenhouse and end in the abundance of fall harvest. Jeremy is a great teacher, very dedicated to accessible, fresh and nutritious food and there's a lot to learn with them. I would definitely do the program again. It won't break your back, but you will definitely get your work and learning in."
