"Learning from the Earth" - An Introduction to Ethnobotany
These series of ethnobotany classes were so successful in 2023 that our instructor, Renee Fredrickson, has agreed to teach them again this year. Renee is an ethnobotanist and former teacher from Northwest School, where she taught a year-long Ethnobotany program for seniors.
"Ethnobotany is not a class. It's a way of looking at the world. It is science in its fundamental form: to look, to wonder, to ask questions, to figure out how knowledge came to be. It's that process of learning and knowing from very first-hand experience. The science isn't separate from the deep respect for the plant world" (Renee Fredrickson).
Participants will learn how to forage in the wild, discover the culinary and medicinal uses of different plants, keep their own field journal, and if in season, make something medicinal to take home, or culinary to taste.
The six classes are scheduled for April 27th, May 18th, June 22, July 27, August 17, and September 7. 10:30-2:00 pm. Class size is limited so sign up early!
Open to families, but adults must be responsible for their children. Older children, in particular junior high or high schoolers, would enjoy this hands-on learning experience. Sign up by emailing [email protected].
Participants will be sent an email prior to the class with instructions on purchasing a field journal and what to bring and wear. Cost: $60/class or $360 for the six classes. Participants are encouraged to sign up for all six classes as the knowledge builds on the previous class's learning experiences. The cost for each class includes a $10 additional fee class for materials provided by the instructor for participants to take home. Payment can be made at the farm or before through our online store.
"What a treasure this course has been. Renee has a gifted voice and deep wisdom for the environment she has planted herself in. I can't fully express my appreciation for the cultural, medicinal, symbiotic knowledge I have gleaned about our native/non-native plants and trees. Spending time with Renee and the other students who have a genuine desire to learn, share, and bond, has been time well spent. I highly recommend this course. " -- M. B. 2023 Participant
